Kaiya sat huddled in the corner of the sofa, her feet curled up beneath her.  Her arms clutched a huge throw pillow close to her chest, as if hugging an old childhood doll. She was motionless, other than her eyes, which although distant, seemed to follow the women around the room as they spoke. She listened intently to their testimonies and how abortion had negatively affected their lives.  Knowing her story, I sat quietly, wondering to myself, if she would be able to take such a first step.  My mind kept reflecting that she was not much older than my 18-year-old son.  I ached for her heart and prayed that God would hold her up through this first evening.

As her silence broke, she spoke slowly and almost in a whisper. Tears ran down her face as she shared her relationship with her boyfriend Mattox, and how this “choice” had changed them and their relationship.  We learned that she had been told by her religious parents that she would be kicked out if she came home pregnant. She shared that hearing that statement throughout her childhood had led her to abort.

Being a twenty-something woman of technology, Kaiya had researched her options, and was aware of the results that this “medical choice” might bring her.  She sobbed as she claimed that she “knew” the minute she swallowed that second pill that she had personally taken the life of her baby.  Now the clinic said to simply go home and wait!

Kaiya and Mattox rented a hotel room, as waiting for the results while living at home with their parents, was out of the question. Kaiya said she wanted to protect Mattox from what was about to happen. So, instead of experiencing the loss together, she sat weeping on one side of the closed bathroom door, as the father of her unborn sat helplessly on the other.  Never did she imagine the depth of emotions that would be triggered when she saw her small embryo, floating in the water!

Crying, sobbing women reached out to Kaiya that evening to help!  They knew her story was different from theirs, and yet they all prayed that Kaiyas' mind would release that shocking image. They encouraged her to share her emotions with Mattox. He was feeling left in the dark and bewildered as to why Kaiya was so traumatized.

Rather than going to sleep and spending 10-15 minutes “on the table,” the chemical RU486 abortion takes days, sometimes as long as a week.  Sometimes, it doesn't even work.  So, in addition to the nausea and pain, women may experience days of anxiety, wondering when “it” will happen.  Then there are those, like Kaiya, who may witness the aborted embryo itself.  That emotional impact may leave scars on their hearts for a very long time.
